BIOMOD 3-D
Bioremediation, Fate and Transport for
MODFLOW

BIOMOD 3-D (Bioremediation Fate and transport
simulator) is a 3-D finite element fate and multicomponent transport model that is linked
to the USGS finite difference MODFLOW 3-D model. BIOMOD has the following
key features:
- Convection, dispersion, diffusion, adsorption, desorption, and
microbial processes based on oxygen limited, first order, Monod, anaerobic biodegradation
kinetics, as well as anaerobic or first order sequential degradation involving multiple
daughter products are simulated (e.g., chain degradation of PCE TCE DCE VC can be
simulated) . This allows real world modeling not accomplished in other fate and
transport packages
- Results of transient/steady state groundwater MODFLOW simulations
are used to obtain velocity distribution at various time for use in BIOMOD.
- Temporal and spatial variations in the source (i.e., residual
dense or light nonaqueous phase liquids and/or other nonpoint contaminations) is allowed,
and, given the initial conditions, changes in loading to groundwater are computed and
updated internally.
- Spatial variation in contaminant injection and/or extraction.
- Simulation of heterogeneous and/or anisotropic porous media
(includes cross derivative terms in dispersive tensor), with (or without) fractures based
on a dual porosity approach.
Quickly associate MODFLOW files and run them in the
Windows pre-processor
- Rectangular 2-D/3-D prism or isoparametric
quadrilateral/hexahedral elements to accurately model irregular domain/layers and material
boundaries, hydraulic and physical boundaries.
- Modeling transport in sub-domain(s) within a large regional
MODFLOW domain is allowed for accurate results and computational efficiency.
- BIOMOD will interpolate velocity distribution in
a small domain from results of a regional MODFLOW simulation.
- Computationally efficient matrix solution by conjugate gradient
method with preconditioning. For many problems, this feature can give a five to six times
speed up factor compared to a direct matrix solution.
- Restart capabilities for multistage simulations
OUTPUT
For each species:
- Spatial distribution of concentration in water, oil (if present)
and solid phases with time
- Mass in aqueous phase vs. Time
- Mass remaining in NAPL phase (if present) vs. time
- Mass adsorbed on the solid phase vs. time
User Interface in Windows 3.X, Windows 95 and Windows
NT
- Pre-processor tabbed notebook for simplified data entry
- Graphical mesh generator and editor
BIOMOD utilizing a smaller domain
from a MODFLOW regional model. Heterogeneous soil zones are defined in the mesh editor.
- Mesh editor allows irregular elements and assigning of any user
defined properties
- 32-bit version available for faster processing
- Run module builds a full data file for the MS-DOS numerical model
- Post-processor passes output file data to native graphing, to
exported files, and to Surfer for contouring
